Estimation is a Skill for Life.
As you walk around and live your life, imagine if you could easily estimate:
- how much a bill will be,
- which item is the best value for money
- the size, areas and angles of things
Also, it would be great if you could quickly guess how many people are in a room, how many cars in the street, how many boxes on the shelf, or even how many seagulls on the beach?
Estimation is the approximation of a number, calculation, quantity, or measurement.
Ms. Makowski's class has been looking at two different ways to estimate sums - by front end rounding and by using compatible numbers!
"Front-end strategy" is a method for estimating an answer to a calculation problem by focusing on the "front-end" or "left-most" digits of a number.
Compatible numbers are pairs of numbers that are easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide mentally.
Students were asked to round numbers and place them appropriately on the number line.
How did the two numbers (those from front end rounding and compatible numbers) differ from one another?
Which strategy is most accurate and why?
